What is a 3-season tent

A 3-season tent is built for spring through fall. It sheds rain and handles wind, but it is not a winter fortress.

Start with sleep system, then food, then clothing. Keep rain gear at the top of the bag.

Stage the fly, stake the uphill corners first, and keep the inner in the bag until the rain fly is standing. That is the whole trick.

A bear canister is a hard container that bears cannot open. Some wilderness areas require one. Hang bags are not a substitute there.

Fit matters more than the brand. Walk downhill in the store. If your toes hit the front, size up or change the last.

Hammocks are lighter if you have trees. Tents win on exposed ground and in bug season with a full mesh body.

A wicking base layer, a fleece, and a wind shell cover most cold trail mornings. Add a beanie before you add another jacket.

Many national forests allow dispersed camping without a developed-campground permit. Always check the local ranger district first.

For two people on weekend trips, a small canister stove is usually enough. Bring a backup lighter.
